Time signatures are easy in theory; the top number is how many beats are in a bar(i.e. what metre is it in), and the bottom number tells you what kind of note is the beat(4=quarter, 2=half, 8=eighth, etc.), but this concept can be pretty brain melting for people who are only used to reading 4/4 or 3/4 or other "simple" time signatures. Hopefully this video gives enough examples and explanations to smooth out this concept for most people. I might even do another video with just tons of examples, one after another, to practice reading and counting rhythms. Let me know in the comments if that's something you'd like!

    1:13 is this accurate? Doesn't it go up a fifth clockwise and down a fourth counterclockwise? Or maybe i misinterpret what "down a fifth" means in practice...

    • @BradHarrison
      @BradHarrison 3 дні тому

      It’s both both ways! Clockwise is fifths up(fourths down), counterclockwise is fifths down(fourths up). Both are valid and correct. I actually did a whole other video about it! The Circle of Fifths vs The Circle of Fourths: ua-cam.com/video/gT0Fawqrs8w/v-deo.html

      @@BradHarrison Thanks! i suspected i didn't see the whole picture. Watched your other video and now its crystal clear! So basically, F to C is down a fifth but if thinking in upwards direction (towards higher notes) then C -> F will be a fourth. So all depends on how one decide to read the circle in relation to which direction on the pitch you are planning to go. But i guess upwards direction is best to think of since "going down a fifth" will have no meaning if thinking in terms of chord progressions, and to determine what is your I, IV and V chord. Or is there any practical sense in thinking in terms of "down a fifth"? Another thought i have is how come that all relative minors to the keys left and right of the center key is exactly the minors that will be in the chord progression of that key in center? Is it just coincidence or is there a good explanation for it? 😁

    • @BradHarrison
      @BradHarrison День тому

      All intervals are useful at different times! Definitely down a fifth. How else would you know what a dominant chord(V) resolves to? As for relative minors and related chords, it’s makes sense that related chords are close together on the circle, right? That was a major theme in the video. Whether it’s coincidental or purposeful feels more like a philosophy question than anything else. Is there meaning to the relative minor of the 4 chord being the ii of the home key? Maybe, or maybe that’s just how math works(down two from 4 is two). Right?

    A good approach to practice is to observe the key the song/piece is written, if you read music you understand this. For every key there is a chord progression, a pattern, within the scale of that key. For example if it’s written in the key of A, there’s three’s sharps. FCG sharp and if it’s G there’s only one sharp. Simplify the process before even touching your instrument.

    It's interesting how his first premise is literally wrong. You actually don't really improve your weaknesses in sight-reading by sight-reading. Sight-reading is more of a TEST of what you do know, not something that teaches what you don't know. The way you actually improve at sight-reading is by improving reading. You learn music while not looking at your hands and you begin to develop spatial awareness of where your hands are. The difference between doing that and sight-reading is just speed. But tempo is always the easiest thing to add on later as you get more comfortable with a given passage. If you struggle to sight-read larger jumps for example on the left hand and you try sight-reading those you literally will just hopelessly fail and also PRACTICE MISTAKES which is one of the main things you want to avoid. But if you learn dozens of pieces with jumps on the left hand you will learn how to do it. There actually isn't a way around that. You HAVE to do that.

      It applies to many instruments but not all, either because they don’t have the same tuning systems, or because they’re aren’t fully chromatic. It definitely applies to every melodic instrument you would see in a symphony orchestra, but I’m not terribly familiar with Turkish instruments and music. Is the saz fully chromatic? If so, it can play all the major scales, but depending on the music you want to play, major scales may not even be the most applicable. This is something you’d want to explore with a teacher familiar with these genres.

      @@BradHarrisonI'm not sure if the saz is fully chromatic and don't really know what fully chromatic is. i've played the saz for a couple of months and i want to learn a lot of songs on it. But the problem is that the songs i want to learn, i have to learn by ear and i thought scales would help with learning by ear. That is why i asked if it applies to all instruments. thanks for the help btw, i really appreciate it.

      Scales of one kind or another do apply to basically every instrument, and they will definitely help with ear training too. I found one page that talked about learning the sax and they also echoed learning scales. So, short answer, let’s say yes this does apply at least in some form. I recommend finding a teacher too who can help guide you. Even a lesson or two would be helpful. Good luck!

      Please feel free to pause, inspect, digest, practice, review, and rewatch! Everyone gets this stuff at a different pace and some will need more practice and review than others. Good luck!
